Stef with Dorothies at Smokey Joes Cafe

One of the great things about the Dorothy contenders from this year’s “Over The Rainbow” competition is the way they all get on so well and formed lasting friendships which will help the whole gang as their individual careers unfold. Being thrown together in the Dorothy house with a common objective cemented relationships at a formative time for most of them, similar to the first years away at college.

So when Steph Fearon had her first week of fame on the London stage – and by the way Smokey Joe’s Cafe has received a bunch of five star reviews from top critics – it was another opportunity for a great reunion with “all the Dotties”.

So here’s the backstage picture from after the opening Gala night with Dorothys left to right:

Smokey Joes Cafe is on until to 22 August at the Landor Theatre which like a big theatre pub, tiny compared to the grand old big theatres in the West End but Steph may well have made a smart decision by taking up the offer. Not only is she having a great time and learning lots, musically, but the show is doing well and there are high hopes of a transfer in to central London later.

Steph Fearon’s Summer Gig – Smokey Joe’s Café

Well it didn’t take long for Steph Fearon to land a role in a London theatre soon after gaining fantastic exposure and winning new fans at Over The Rainbow. Steph is going to be in the Landor theatre’s summer revival of Smokey Joe’s Café.

Smokey Joe’s Café enjoyed a West End run at the Prince of Wales theatre in 1996. The story is set in the America of the 1950s and showcases the musical of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller who wrote timeless songs including On Broadway, Jailhouse Rock and Stand By Me. So its a kind of jukebox musical really, but with the kind of classic musical songs that Steph will be able to really get her teeth into and gain that all important experience on the regular stage.

One of London’s most adventurous and attractive little theatres, The Landor is situated above the Landor pub in Landor Road in south London, a stone’s-throw from Clapham North tube station and various bus stops.

Steph Fearon will be joined in the cast of Smokey Joe’s Cafe from 13 July to 22 August, by Marc Akinfolarin, Miguel Angel, Edward Baruwa, Simon Hardwick, Ngo Ngofa and Philippa Stefani.

It’s not the first London stage appearance for Stef though, Steph Fearon has already appeared in productions of Whistle Down The Wind (Aldwych theatre) and The Wind In The Willows (Open Air theatre).

Smokey Joe’s Cafe is a musical revue showcasing 39 pop standards, including rock and roll, rhythm and blues songs written by songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The Original Broadway cast recording, Smokey Joe’s Cafe: The Songs Of Leiber And Stoller won a Grammy award in 1995.

After a Los Angeles tryout, the revue opened on Broadway in 1995, running for 2,036 performances, and had a London run in 1996.

Which songs will Steph be singing in Smokey Joe’s Cafe? She’s not sure yet, rehearsals start in two weeks time!
