Jessica Robinson to stand in for Steph Fearon 3 Nights Only

1

Apparently Steph Fearon has a minor wrist operation booked for later in August and since Smokey Joe’s Cafe has extended, this leaves a few nights when Steph can’t perform at the Landor Theatre. But the great news is that another Dorothy from Over The Rainbow, none other than Jessica Robinson has been drafted in as a replacement.

Jessica Robinson will appear in Steph Fearon’s role from the 20th to the 22nd August 2010 while Steph recovers.

Jessica Robinson was described Andrew Lloyd Webber as “wonderful and quirky” and came within touching distance of playing the lead role in his production of The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz which is opening at The London Palladium next year.

“Over The Rainbow” contestant Jessica Robinson will take over from fellow Dorothy Stephanie Fearon in “Smokey Joe’s Cafe” for just three nights from the 20th to 22nd of August to allow Stephanie to have an operation on her wrist.

The self-proclaimed “wacky” Dorothy, Jessica Robinson, 18, from Middlesbrough just missed out on a semi final place despite an energetic, umbrella-wielding performance of the tongue-twisting classic ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ from Mary Poppins

Jessica was voted out in the sing-off, but Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber said:

I say this with the heaviest heart in the entire world, Jessica you are so wonderful and quirky, you’re a real star in the making.

The Landor Theatre’s acclaimed production of “Smokey Joe’s Cafe”, voted No1 Critics Choice in Time Out London, recently extended its record-breaking run by three weeks. The first major production of the musical since its West End run at the Prince of Wales Theatre in 1996, will now play until Sunday September 5. It had been booking to August 12.

Well it didn’t take long for Steph Fearon to land a role in a London theatre soon after gaining fantastic exposure and winning new fans at Over The Rainbow. Steph is going to be in the Landor theatre’s summer revival of Smokey Joe’s Café.

Smokey Joe’s Café enjoyed a West End run at the Prince of Wales theatre in 1996. The story is set in the America of the 1950s and showcases the musical of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller who wrote timeless songs including On Broadway, Jailhouse Rock and Stand By Me. So its a kind of jukebox musical really, but with the kind of classic musical songs that Steph will be able to really get her teeth into and gain that all important experience on the regular stage.

One of London’s most adventurous and attractive little theatres, The Landor is situated above the Landor pub in Landor Road in south London, a stone’s-throw from Clapham North tube station and various bus stops.

It’s not the first London stage appearance for Stef though, Steph Fearon has already appeared in productions of Whistle Down The Wind (Aldwych theatre) and The Wind In The Willows (Open Air theatre).

Smokey Joe’s Cafe is a musical revue showcasing 39 pop standards, including rock and roll, rhythm and blues songs written by songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The Original Broadway cast recording, Smokey Joe’s Cafe: The Songs Of Leiber And Stoller won a Grammy award in 1995.

After a Los Angeles tryout, the revue opened on Broadway in 1995, running for 2,036 performances, and had a London run in 1996.

Which songs will Steph be singing in Smokey Joe’s Cafe? She’s not sure yet, rehearsals start in two weeks time!
